Introduction

Marine phytoplankton is a nutritional supplement that is considered to have many health benefits because of the many nutrients it contains. One type of phytoplankton commercially available today that improves health is Cellankton®. Cellankton® is cultured using a patent pending technology from seawater taken from the ocean, which contains naturally occurring species of phytoplankton. Every batch is tested to confirm that the phytoplankton is safe for human consumption.

Cellankton® is composed of over 60 species of marine phytoplankton, of which diatoms and golden brown algae are the most prevalent. Skeletonema costatum, which constitutes the major species of Cellankton®, contains (as a percentage of dry weight) 25% protein, 4.6% carbohydrate,10% lipid and 1.21% chorophyll a (Lavens and Sorgeloos, 1996).

Anecdotal reports indicate that Cellankton® offers many nutritional and health benefits that go beyond other plant foods. Following are some of the anecdotal effects of consuming marine phytoplankton:

Clinical Studies on Cellankton®

Preliminary studies indicate that Cellankton® supports health and well-being. In a study at the University of Manitoba, giving 18 psoriasis subjects Cellankton® improved quality of life and showed a tendency to favorably modify blood lipid profiles. Psoriasis is associated with dyslipemia, an abnormal amount of lipids in the blood (Akhyani, 2007). The total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL or “bad” cholesterol) were decreased by consuming Cellankton®. The reduction in total cholesterol and more importantly the “bad” cholesterol are important and likely would benefit cardiovascular health in everyone, not only psoriasis patients.

 

The severity symptoms associated with psoriasis were improved by taking Cellankton®, as measured by the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI). Subjects taking Cellankton® also showed an improvement in quality of life, as measured by the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Results showed a decrease in DLQI scores, demonstrating that subjects experienced less problems with their feelings about their skin and improved their health-related quality after the algae treatment in the study.

 

Another study was conducted with Cellankton® with 28 subjects who took Cellankton® over 90 days, there were improvements observed in every measure for most of the subjects. There were significant improvements in various blood measures (complete blood cell count and a comprehensive metabolic panel were assessed), vision, decreases in blood pressure and weight, increases in energy levels and improvements in health and wellness surveys. Noticeably increased energy levels were reported by 17 out of 28 subjects. Strikingly, most of the changes at the 90-day time point were a return to values of blood measures that were out of range to within the normal range.

 

Other tests produced dramatic results. Body Mass Index was significantly decreased, indicating that Cellankton® could be beneficial for weight loss. The four subjects who had high blood glucose moved to normal levels, suggesting that Cellankton® may help maintain normal blood glucose levels. Of the 20 individuals who did not have 20/20 vision, 13 improved their vision by one line on the vision chart. Some subjects reported that their vision was clearer.

 

The results of these studies demonstrate that Cellankton® produces many beneficial effects, including lowered cholesterol, reduced psoriasis symptoms, improved energy, brain function, vision, blood pressure, blood glucose, immune function and weight management. Future studies are planned to further delineate the effects of Cellankton®.

Summary

Marine phytoplankton is a whole food supplement with a full complement of essential nutrients. These micro-algae contain an astounding array of nutritional elements: vitamins, macrominerals, trace minerals, essential fatty acids, nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), amino acids, protein, chlorophyll, and a vast spectrum of phytochemicals. They are thought to contain every nutrient required by the human body and this explains the wide range of health benefits. These superfoods can help individuals prevent and reverse disease.
